Blakelock, the capital city : summary

A short history

The Branduin river being at that time inappropriate to navigation for ca. 12 km, cargo and passengers used to cross land to reach the Aythlis river to continue further downstream (the Aythlis river being fairly navigable, and joining the Branduin 15 km northeast).
Settlers took advantage of this situation to build a stronghold called Blake's Lock. Earliest sources date back to 469 BP with the Brendan Chronicle citing 'the marvellous path named Bailiff Road [Chaussée du Bailli], on which every pilgrim and traveler can find safety to cross land between the rivers'.
Between 330 and 105 BP, with the colonization of the inner lands by Stervian clans, the town became a central hub for trade. It began gradually to compete with older Stervian cities as a political center, becoming one of the Five Great Cities during the First Stervian Confederation.
In order to meet the needs of the industrial age, a canal (Canal des Quatre Fleuves) was built in the first century AP. With more and more demand for transport fluidity, the dredging of the Branduin became necessary. Both the upper and lower arms of the Branduin were dredged in the first years of the second century AP, thanks to gigantic public works employing thousands of convicts and other forced workers. The need for a link between Branduin and Aythlis had therefore disappeared, but Blakelock had already become one of the most powerful Stervian cities.
Far from the coasts, it was always free of Mauretanian influences, and was seen from the Imperial Court as 'the heart of the Stervian tribes evil'.
When Brolecia fell, the remnants of this ill-fated nation decided to choose Blakelock as their capital city and it remained the capital city of the new Stervian Confederation.
