Introduction

Stervia, also known as the Stervian Confederation, is the main successor state to the ex-Federal Republic of Brolecia (northwestern Melania).

Background : recent history

Brolecia was created when the Empire of Mauretania, in its later days an Ordlandic protectorate, disappeared under the pressure of various pro-independence movements. The decadence of Mauretanian élites helped the attrition of the imperial power. Mauretania finally collapsed when Stervians (Phenixian-speaking inhabitants of Mauretania, mostly of Stervian origin), who had gradually become the backbone of the Mauretanian State, decided to become independent, joining thus several movements led by Ingallish-, Spahneesh- and Jerman-speaking settlers.

The northern part of Melania was then split in three states : San Patricio (roughly shaped after the former mauretanian 'Zab' region), Mauré (the westernmost part, seeking protection as a Kingdom under Ordlandic protectorate) and Brolecia. A referendum held on 03.06.299 administered by a Commission empowered by the three states (the Joint Election Commission To the Not-Yet-Independent Territories of the Former Maurétanie) approved this operation.

Brolecia was an interesting, though utopian project to form a nation out of a common history of resistance against an evil empire. It lasted a very short time : less than two years later, four Eastern, mostly Ingallish- and Jerman-speaking Brolecian states (Oxpla, Schwarzland, Federal District and Grozlia) separated to form Listonia (named after the former Brolecian federal capital city). It was to be followed by the split-off of two Western, mostly Spahneesh-speaking states (Guetesao and Bajapez) which decided to join the former Extremo in the new Republic of Porto Capital.

Stervia : what's in a name ?

Stervia comes from 'Stervian' (whose actual origin is still disputed). Stervians were seafarer clans who settled present-day Brolecia between - 550 and 145. Most Stervians do speak Stervian (a language written with runes) and a second language, depending on which country the clans (or tribes) spent some time in before finally reaching Brolecia. Many Stervians do speak three languages.

It is estimated that the Stervian clans spent up to 1200 years migrating before coming to Brolecia. During this long period, Stervian language and culture kept the different clans together.
The largest Stervian group (those speaking Stervian and Phenixian) did not try to compete with the Empire of Mauretanie, but they integrated it instead as civil servants, engineers, officers, making of the Mauretanian Empire a state ruled by a Phenixian-speaking élite.

The national Stervian symbol is the giant sea-turtle (eylfalas in Stervian).

Location & basic geographical data

Stervia is a medium-size country located in the northwestern part of the Melanian continent and therefore in the very geographical center of the New World.

The Stervian Confederation has jurisdiction over :

  • mainland Stervia (18 federate states and the autonomous region of Zanga)
  • the territories of Southern Brovoyoakes and Northern Brovoyoakes, located on the northern shore of the Melanian Sea (under the Puerto Bravo Treaty of 25.07.299)
  • Stervia has, in addition, a common and indivisible sovereignty (together with the Free and Independent Republic of Aros, the Republic of Ordland, the Estado Unido de San Patricio, the Constitutional Monarchy of Morania and the Republic of Eastern Delgamia) over the Mesto Park Area, as established by the Mesotnia Charter (also of 25.07.299).
